The Brookline Commission for Women is hosting a Childcare Forum on Wednesday, April 17th from 6-730pm at the Brookline Main Library, Hunneman Hall, 361 Washington Street. Panelists will speak on the benefits and challenges of various types of daycare options that are available for families with children in the birth to 5 age range, including daycare centers, family daycares, au pairs and nannies. Representatives from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Brookline Health Department and the Brookline Police Department will discuss safety, proper licensing and background checks. Find out how well-designed spaces facilitate healthy physical, emotional, intellectual and social development in a variety of settings (from schools to early childhood programs in public spaces). Discover strategies for assessing children's learning, meeting teaching standards, alleviating challenging behaviors and bringing more joy to learning. Documenting Children's Learning with Nature, 1pm - 4pm Discover effective methods for supporting and documenting children's learning indoors and outdoors and for helping children with behavioral challenges and verbal-language delays become more successful. Learn how to "listen" to children's visual-spatial language, and explore helpful tips for successfully using a documentation tool called "Nature Notes" to record children's learning in outdoor classrooms. Gain a deeper understanding of why visual-spatial learning is important and how the visual-spatial learner is often misunderstood. Explore techniques for supporting each child's unique talents and abilities, and ways to use the natural world as a link to oral and written literacy. The Arts and Nature, 1pm - 4pm Discover engaging art experiences inspired by nature that help children make deeper connections with the world around them. Experience the Look-Move-Build-Sketch planning tool that encourages multifaceted arts exploration. The EDCO Collaborative invites you to participate in: Developing Math and Science Skills for Young Children: Common Core Standards in Early Childhood Classrooms April 25 and May 2, 9, & 16, 2013 ~ 4:00 pm - 7:15 pm Heath School, Brookline The Common Core State Standards have implications for practice at the early childhood level. There are also new K-12 science education standards under development at the national level (the Next Generation Science Standards, NGSS) and in Massachusetts. This course is designed to introduce these standards to Kindergarten and pre-school teachers and to model ways to integrate these standards with teaching practices in early childhood education. Teachers will be engaged in active learning experiences around science and math phenomena and in discussions about the implications of these and the Common Core Literacy standards for preschool curriculum and teaching. The course will meet in four sessions, two will focus on science and two will focus on mathematics. Literacy strands will be interwoven throughout. Course Description: Using Vivian Paley’s storytelling curriculum as a model to begin with, participants will explore a variety of ways to introduce a storytelling curriculum to their students. We will define the learning benefits for all children, and discuss modifications for very young children (2’s and 3”s) and children with significant learning differences. Participants will practice the Paley model in class and try out an activity of their choice in their classrooms. A wide variety of resource material will be provided to support teachers in initiating storytelling and acting in their classrooms. About the Instructor: Karen DeRusha has been a preschool and elementary school educator for 40+ years in the Newton Public Schools and elsewhere. In Newton, Karen provided professional development workshops for K and pre-school teachers, including workshops that used the work of Vivian Paley. She also coordinated Newton’s mentorship program, training newly hired teachers. Karen has created and presented numerous early childhood workshops throughout Massachusetts and at UMass Dartmouth. During each session we will work in small groups to create materials for classroom use and examine picture books that promote phonemic awareness. There will be a small project to be completed in between the two sessions, which will then be shared during the second session. About the Instructor: Susan Welch is currently an Elementary Literacy Specialist for the Newton Public Schools. She has previously taught in preschool, kindergarten, and primary grade classrooms for the past 30 years.
